Restaurant review: The Gate, EC1

A veggie delight in the heart of Islington, where every dish and cocktail is Insta-worthy!

Go: For a special occasion dinner and drinks.

Eat: Three-lentil pate terrine to start, tortillas (pictured) for main and strawberry eton mess (with vegan meringue) for dessert.

Pay: Around £13 for a main, £9 for a cocktail.

The Gate is the perfect restaurant for a fancy dinner, without any of the pretentiousness or hefty price-tag that comes with some London restaurants. No matter what you order, each dish is presented with an artistic flair that looks almost too good to eat.

Obviously, if you’re a veggie you’ll be spoilt for choice and can enjoy the novel feeling of being able to order whatever you like off of the menu. And there’s some really creative dishes, too – not a mushroom risotto in sight. I can thoroughly recommend the tortillas. These came with two fillings of sweet potato, sweetcorn, goats’ cheese, chilli, lime and coriander; baked beetroot, feta and parsley, served with guacamole, sour cream and black bean pepper salsa. And yes, it was as delish as it sounds.

Just a short walk from Angel station, The Gate the perfect place for a celebratory meal, and I’ll definitely be going back!

The Gate, Islington, 370 St John St, London EC1V 4NN.
